IODINE   150 mcg  a day

Required for the proper functioning of the thyroid gland, conversion of beta carotene to vitamin A, and memory.  The Barnes thyroid function test can be made by taking armpit temperature
the first thing in the morning upon awakening and before arising. Menstruating women must perform the test on the second, third, and fourth days of menstruation.  If the temperature is
consistently at or below 97.6 degrees it suggests that the thyroid is not supplying a sufficient amount of the hormone. This could indicate an under active thyroid caused by a lack of iodine or other nutrients. A thyroid deficiency has been reported to cause an increase in cholesterol and atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries.  (Heart Attack Rareness in Thyroid Treated Patients,  Broda Barnes, MD).  Iodine deficiency can cause thyroid cancer and allows
estrogen
to excite the development of cystic mastitis and breast cancer.  Breast tissue requires the elemental form of iodine.  Cystic mastitis responds only to the elemental forms of iodine supplements such as kelp and iodine caseinate (27), and to the natural form of vitamin E. Non toxic up to 1000 mcg per day.

Potassium iodide, KI, protects against thyroid cancer in those exposed to radioactive iodine.  In the high doses used it is a thyroid blocking agent thereby stopping the utilization of all
iodine by the thyroid gland.  This prevents the absorption  of radioactive iodine which will cause cancer of the thyroid. Further information can be found on the net under potassium iodide.
