FOOD SUPPLEMENTS: THEIR EFFECTS ON THE BODY Version 6.02 P.O. Box 424, Glenns Ferry, ID 83623
LATEST UPDATES July 23, 2003 Informative and educational. Downloads, reviews and ratings. Some downloads are freeware, some are free trials. Look for highly rated freeware, unless you don't mind paying for what you can get for free. Anti-Spyware Tools "These tools can detect serious spy activity like keyloggers, activity monitoring software, web site loggers and also common Adware, web bugs, tracking cookies and many other items that are frequently encountered on the web. Many people consider them an invasion of their privacy, even though they are mostly advertising related and usually limited to anonymous tracking, at least so they say..." Snoop Prevention Tools "Your computer keeps track of your activities in many different ways. Usually, this is more convenient than harmful, however there may be times where you don't want other users of the same computer to stumble across your previous activities, whether by coincident, or by snooping around..."
But wait, there's more! Now how much would you pay?... (nothing, if you're at all like me and can get it for free. Just keep reading.)
July 13, 2003 Very good general interest health web site with news, message boards and links to a variety of other resources - a bit like a Yahoo for the health conscious, but with an extensive archive of health and nutrition related articles. Try the site's search engine; my search for "arginine" returned 26 relevant articles from the WebMD archives.
Don't assume the fact that the link to WebMD Health is way down at the bottom of the Links page has any relevance to its value. It's only because the links are arranged in alphabetical order. Should I change that?
June 10, 2003
May 25, 2003
Completed the latest round of updates, which can only mean a new round is about to begin. In addition, I have added links to specific referenced articles where possible when previously the links were just to the home page of the referenced source, for example The New England Journal of Medicine or Science News.
If you encounter any problems, links that don't work as expected, etc. please send me an email message. Futhermore, if you encounter anything that works, that you didn't expect to work, feel free to let me know and I'll do my best to remedy the situation
If you found yourself here by accident and have no interest in nutrition, just so your visit isn't a total waste of time, here is a wise energy conservation tip: If you're not using a light, turn it off. My own personal addition to that advice: If it's a pilot light, ask the pilot first. Cheers.
May 16, 2003 Current issue here "The Journal of Nutrition continues to have as its goal the publication of papers based on original nutrition research in humans and other animal species. In circulation since 1928, it is the official monthly publication of the American Society for Nutritional Sciences. It is distributed to more than 4,500 subscribers worldwide. The Journal publishes original research reported by authors in over 30 countries..." Current issue here Yes, I know the AMA is not popular among many nutrition buffs. I just provide the link. I leave it to you decide what you think is of value. The JCI is the publication of the American Society for Clinical Investigation, an honor society of physician-scientists. April 21, 2003 Journal of medical research. Excelent resource, extensive archives. Well worth a visit if you're willing to spend some time. April 13, 2003
Completed the latest round of updates, including the following pages: Boron, Iron, Manganese, Potassium, Selenium, Zinc Picolinate, Alcohol, L-Arginine, Curcumin, Lysine, Omega-3 Fatty Acids, Turmeric, B-1Thaimin, B-2 Riboflavin, B-5 Pantothine, B-12 Methylcobalamin, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, BHT and Notes.
March 19, 2003
Removed the message board. I had the free version of Pop-Up Stopper activated when I added it, so I didn't realize that pop-up advertising windows opened when the message board was accessed. March 18, 2003 Updates to individual pages continue. Added message board to home page. It will only be useful if it gets used so I hope you'll at least check it out and post something.
February 28, 2003
Continuing to update to version 6.02 various FoodSupplements web site pages. This will be an ongoing process for some time to come.
February 22, 2003 Updated page to version 6.02. Reduced recommended intake based on latest research. Numerous other page updates coming soon.
February 15, 2003 Web site of Dr. Andrew Saul, specialist in natural healing and author of several books on the subject, including DOCTOR YOURSELF and PAPERBACK CLINIC. Much useful information, numerous references and plenty of good advice. Simple layout, easy to navigate. Well worth a visit.
Deleted: Javascript that had been added to the LINKS page without my knowledge or permission, causing a pop-up window to open when the page was visited. The incident has been reported to Homestead support and I am currently awaiting their response and explanation.
If you ever experience pop-up windows or encounter any commercial advertising when visiting the FoodSupplements web site, please let me know.
January 20, 2003 If you don't have Excel, download Excel Viewer here for free.
December 18, 2002 Added: I don't have any personal experience with this one yet, but the description sounds encouraging... From the developer: "SpyStopper will block spyware, Web bugs, worms, cookies, ads, scripts, and other intrusive devices to protect you from being profiled and tracked. When you use your computer and the Internet, you may be monitored without your knowledge or explicit permission. Hackers, advertisers, and corporations may use Web bugs, spyware, cookies, worms, ads, and scripts to gain access to your information and invade your privacy. SpyStopper is designed to block those devices that are used without your knowledge. It blocks only those suspicious ads, cookies and scripts that are intrusive and may cause security and privacy concerns. It will protect your online privacy."
November 21, 2002 "Opening a greeting card from FriendGreetings.com can trigger a software download that will automatically send an e-card to everyone in your address book... "friendgreetings.com" will attempt to send marketing email to everybody in your Microsoft Office address book " Source:
To read a typical email response, click here. Okay, maybe it's not a typical response, but it was mine. If you have a firewall, no need to worry.
August 2, 2002 Created a new page for PC Health Advisories and removed it from the News page due to viewing problems with large sized font settings selected.
July 22, 2002
July 19, 2002
July 2, 2002 Removed outdated links. Another one bites the dust... "HealthGate Data Corp. has acquired natural health content provider The Natural Pharmacist (TNP)..." Apparently they've gone commercial - none of the links work anymore, but they generously provide information on how to purchase their services: http://tnp.healthgate.com/buy.html. If you don't sense a bit of cynicism here then perhaps I'm being too subtle, but I guess I lack the knack for writing scathing commentary. Look for all links to The Natural Pharmacist to disappear soon. Please, if you find broken links, or know of good free sites, leave your comments in the guestbook or email me. June 27, 2002
Finished updating pages to include links to definitions on the new On-line Medical Dictionary web site. I've no doubt missed or messed up some on the 100 plus individual pages, so if you find errors, I'd appreciate it if you'd let me know. Thanks.
June 19, 2002 "Medic8 is a leading medical portal for healthcare professionals and consumers around the world... Medic8 is an independent website which provides quick, easy access to the best medical resources on the internet. All websites in the Medic8 directory are peer-reviewed for suitability prior to listing." That's what they say. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. A relatively simple to use tool to keep track of the number of calories and the nutrients in the foods you consume each day.
June 8, 2002 J. A. Brohart, author of the web site Autism Help For You, says of the site: "To learn how nutrition impacts the autistic child, visit http://www.autismhelpforyou.com. This site addresses many topics related to autism, including nutrition/supplement/diet issues and how they are key in recovering autistic children. This site provides one family's story of hope in dealing with this disorder and steers parents to key information to help with early recovery." Not much that I can add to that, except to say that it contains the complete text of her book "Saving Zachary: The Death and Rebirth of a Family Coping With Autism", a well written account of her experiences with her autistic son.
May 19, 2002 Added PC HEALTH ADVISORIES (click on link at top of NEWS page, or scroll down) with the latest 10 virus alerts, top 10 viruses of last month and the top 10 virus hoaxes. Outdated links on various pages on the site are continuing to be updated at the rate of a few pages per day. May 3, 2002 Updated the NOTES AND REFERENCES page. Haven't yet added any links. Many of the old ones were probably out of date anyway. I'm continuing to update links to the On-line Medical Dictionary on individual nutrient pages, but with over 100 pages on the site, I'm for sure not going to finish this week. April 24, 2002 T.D. Holtjer's web site offers personal views, insight and advice related to dealing with Bipolar Disorder. Link to English language page here.
April 23, 2002 Unfortunately, they don't yet incude a rating of the FoodSupplements web site (as of April 23, 2002)... or maybe it is fortunate, depending on what their opinion will be -- I submitted it today. :-)
Yeah I know, it might appear that I'm slacking off in my duties, but as the intrepid unpaid volunteer webmaster of this site, in addition to a full-time job, I've got a family to attend to. I hope you'll forgive the fact that progress at times seems slow. Thank you for your understanding and continuing patronage.

March 19, 2002 The On-line Medical Dictionary has moved. Furthermore, I just noticed that the URL on the LINKS page didn't even have their previous address correct. Please, if you encounter a link that doesn't work as advertised, let me know... except for all the links currently on existing pages that refer to definitions on their old site. I will continue the ongoing FoodSupplements site update with links to the new OMD site. When that is complete I will go back and update existing pages to link to definitions on the new OMD site.
March 10, 2002 February 24, 2002 Finished updating the VITAMINS pages. Finally! If you spot any errors, omissions, broken links, etc, please email me.
February 12, 2002 Continuing to update VITAMINS pages, slowly but surely to version 6.01. A lot of new information. January 18, 2002 Updated pages in the MINERALS section to version 6.01 - content as well as appearance. If the colors give you a headache, don't fret. I'll come up with different ones for the other sections. Further updates are on the way.
December 15, 2001 Added links to several noteworthy, informative web sites having not one whit to do with nutrition. Dedicated to the precept that "Man does not live by bread alone..." You can probably find nutritional information, but you'll have to look for it. They say it best... "Welcome to the laboratory that never sleeps! MadSci Network represents a collective cranium of scientists providing answers to your questions. For good measure we provide a variety of oddities and other ends as well." The irreverent Cecil Adams has been "fighting ignorance since 1973. (It's taking longer than we thought.)" If you ever receive an email message containing a touching or disconcerting story urging you to forward it to everyone you care about, or to everyone you know, check it out here first.
December 8, 2001 Added the capability to search the entire FoodSupplements web site. Numerous articles on health and nutrition. In their words: "The Doctors' Medical Library is a network of over 225 integrated web sites containing enough information to constitute a complete course of study in natural medicine."
December 1, 2001 Synchronized downloadable version of site contents.
November 30, 2001 Corrected error in the sixth line: "Some studies have shown a direct link between retinal..." to read "Some studies have shown an inverse correlation between retinol..."

July 26, 2001 The ODS supports research and disseminates research results in the area of dietary supplements. Information about health fraud schemes, and health care products and services. "Be wary of unscrupulous marketers who use cyberspace to peddle "miracle" treatments and cures to vulnerable consumers. Many of the ads and websites, which feature exotic potions and pills, special curative diets, strange magnetic or electrical devices, or newly discovered treatments, contain questionable claims about the effectiveness and safety of these products or services..." July 18, 2001 The NIH mission is to uncover new knowledge that will lead to better health for everyone. NIH works toward that mission by: -conducting research in its own laboratories; -supporting the research of non-Federal scientists in universities, medical schools, hospitals, and research institutions throughout the country and abroad; -helping in the training of research investigators; and fostering communication of medical information. July 9, 2001 Have nutrition related questions you would like answered by a pharmacist? The E-Pharmacist, researcher, ex-professor and licensed pharmacist, will provide accurate and unbiased answers. Excess zinc also hinders absorption of copper, which can cause RBC microcytosis, and neutropenia.
"Zinc Shakes", reported in mine workers, is caused by inhalation of zinc oxide fumes and results in neurologic damage.
For personal use only. Not for sale or hire. Permission to make copies by you for you and your friends is hereby granted. If you find this list to be of value a donation of any amount would be greatly appreciated.
